This week’s featured video is another Honorable Mention from The Baldwin School in Pennsylvania. Complete with ancient models, ancient advertisements and most importantly ancient fashion, viewers get a VIP pass to an ancient Greco-American Fashion Week. This clever film was created by middle school students Alexa May, Lindsey, Caroline, Anna and Sasha with the help and inspiration of their teacher, Jeannette Keshishian.
The students were immediately excited about the project. There were so many ideas to work with and so many elements about fashion that they couldn’t wait to explore. It was easy to agree on a Greco-American Fashion Week for the theme because they knew it would be “riveting and still informative at the same time.”[1] It would allow them to delve into the similarities between modern American fashion and the fashions of ancient Greece. The young filmmakers didn’t want to focus solely on the clothes of ancient Greece, however. They also wanted to feature accessories like shoes and wigs. So they came up with the brilliant idea of using commercials to showcase those items.
The students said that fashion is a way for them to express themselves and show their individuality. They wanted to do the same with their video. It was important to them that each student had a moment in the video that would allow her to stand out and be unique. In the end, they learned so much about ancient fashion—including facts such as the symbolism behind the purple stripe on a toga—and were so grateful to have the opportunity to “learn, have fun and do what we love.”[2]
Before stepping into the glamorous world of ancient fashion, take a moment to learn a bit more about these hard-working students.
