LegacyQuest International Children’s Film and Video Festival is co-sponsored by Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) and AntiquityNOW (AN).   It is open to young people between the ages of 12 and 15 (6^th – 8^th grades) in the United States and abroad.  It will be held in conjunction with The Archaeology Channel (TAC) International Film and Video Festival, May 11-15, 2016, in Eugene, Oregon, USA.  Films must be produced in 2015 and 2016.

Young people are encouraged to submit videos that represent antiquity’s legacy in contemporary life.  For example, students could depict how the invention of the wheel or calendar has contributed to modern society, or how ancient methods of solar energy have informed today’s green technology.  Please view our Festival invitation video.

Entries may be submitted by an individual student (with parent) or by a group or class under the guidance of a teacher (with parent’s permission).

The concept for the festival was designed in accordance with the social studies programs in the United States and correlates with the National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies: A Framework for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment . 

The festival project will support the development of the following skills in students:

• Literacy
• Critical thinking
• Research skills
• Writing skills
• Visual communications
• Storytelling
• Artistic and design skills
• Collaborative work skills

Incorporating the above skills, LegacyQuest projects can also be effective in addressing students’ different styles of learning and be an exciting and instructive process for students with learning challenges.

• Theme: Antiquity’s legacy in contemporary life. You can explore story ideas at The Archaeology Channel or on AntiquityNOW’s website.
• Format: 5 minute video (maximum); footage can include pictures, infographics, interviews, b-roll, music, etc.; footage (50%) must be original, although stock images can be used, as, for example, with pictures of ancient sites
• Film review copies must be in an acceptable format in either NTSC or PAL TV systems: digital files in any commonly used format (such as such as .avi, .mov, .wmv, .mpg, .mp4, and.m2ts).
• Only one film by each entrant producer may be submitted. Each individual film submission must be accompanied by an official entry form.
• Films must be in English or have English subtitles.
• Project description
  • Individual or group (e.g., classroom) or individual submissions; students must have parent and teacher signed permissions
  • Can be interdisciplinary (e.g., social studies and journalism classes work together on theme of mass communications, ancient v. modern times)
  • Films must be produced in 2015 or 2016

• Submission requirements
  • Entry Form (to be supplied to entrants after our receipt of Letters of Intent)
  • Video with a descriptive film title
  • Research notes, storyboard (optional) and script
  • Short essay (250-500 words, in English) on why this particular topic was chosen
  • Teacher bio (no more than 100 words in English)
  • Student filmmaker bios (no more than 100 words each in English)
  • Teacher and student feedback form (to be sent after completion of the project)
  • Translation of materials to English, if necessary

    • Offers LegacyQuest Festival producers opportunity to gauge entries and give feedback regarding proposal, if necessary.
    • LOI must include:
      • Description of project indicating how students are planning to show the connection between ancient and modern worlds
      • Identification of project filmmaker(s), teacher(s) and any other participants in the project

  • February 26, 2016 – Deadline for submissions
• Judging and awards
  • Judges will consider:
    • The creativity and inventiveness of concept showing the connection between antiquity and modern times
    • The process (as seen through notes/storyboards) as it developed from initial idea to final presentation
    • Cohesiveness of script
    • Strength of written and visual storytelling
  • Awards
    • First, second and third prizes awarded
    • Honorable mention awarded to 10 entries
  • All winners will be announced as part of The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival 2016
    • ALI will promote winners through its website and social media
    • AntiquityNOW will promote winners through its blog, website and social media, and incorporate videos with attribution into educational curricula available on AN’s website
